Fall River, Massachusetts, hosted its 2024 Memorial Day Parade and Closing Ceremony, broadcast live on Fall River Government Television. The event, co-hosted by Evan Massud and Pauline McGrath, honored veterans and Gold Star families, emphasizing Fall River's extensive efforts to commemorate the holiday, which spans several days of ceremonies. Prior to the parade, numerous events took place, including a Civil War Memorial ceremony at Oak Grove Cemetery, a Candlelite vigil for Gold Star families at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, and ceremonies at the Italian-American War Veterans Monument, Polish War Veterans Monument, Griffin Park Memorial, War on Terrorism Monument, and Kennedy Park. Victor Farias, the city's Flags and Officer, was recognized for organizing the placement of over 10,000 flags on veterans' graves with the help of various youth groups and city departments. The parade featured the Fall River Police Department honor guard, city and state elected officials including Mayor Paul Coogan and City Councilor Linda Pereira, the Durfee Band, Gold Star families, VFW Post 486, Disabled American Veterans, the Durfee High School NJROTC, and the Fall River Young Marines. Raymond Mitchell, a former city councilor, served as the Grand Marshal, while Captain Martin M. Zeni, a decorated Navy veteran who passed away at 102, was honored as the Grand Marshal in Memoriam. His son, Matt Zeni, delivered a heartfelt speech detailing his father's extensive military and community service. The closing ceremony, held at the Government Center Atrium, included prayers, the Pledge of Allegiance led by Lucas, the National Anthem sung by Evan Massud, and speeches from Mayor Paul Coogan and Bob Gynan of the Fall River War Council. State Representatives Paul Schmid and Alan Sylvia presented a proclamation from Governor Maura Healey, designating June 6, 2024, as D-Day Remembrance Day. The ceremony also highlighted youth involvement, featuring an essay reading by Niha Raj and a performance of "God Bless America" by Miss Fall River Lily Jeswald, concluding with a closing prayer by Reverend Andy Stinson and the playing of Taps.

36:48you the parade committee has a group that get together and we try to select a Grand Marshall and this year we've also done a Grand Marshal in morium which is someone who has passed and wasn't recognized um and we felt they should be so this year there was a gentleman who served in the United States Air Force he joined at the age of 18 because he believed that everyone should serve
37:13their country upon return from overseas he was stationed in Oklahoma and while on a three-day pass he met his future wife they returned to his roots in Fall River he worked at the Housing Authority he served on the diamond school board for 10 years and as its chairman for seven he served on the for school committee and the for city council and gave countless hours of volunteerism to our
37:42veterans and our community I introduce you to our Grand Marshal of 2024 Raymond Mitchell
38:00thank you Linda I didn't deserve that introduction but thank you and I need cheaters unfortunately AG is catching up to me when I first started running for office in 1979 my mother gave me some Sage advice she told me if I was to be successful at speaking in public I should t stand tall to be seen speak clearly to be understood and keep it short to be appreciated although there have been
38:40times that I haven't taken that advice today I will try my best to take that heed that advice at this time I would like to thank those individuals on the Memorial Day committee who asked me to be the Grand Marshal of this parade it's probably an honor that I truly didn't deserve but an honor I will always cherish there are so many times I have heard people speak ill of our city for
39:09River Massachusetts I feel for River does not get the the credit it truly deserves and in so many ways many communities throughout our country have two or three ceremonies to honor those who have served this country ESP especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice without their sacrifice the Democracy that you and I treasure would no longer be in for River on Memorial Day we do much more than two or three
39:44events as a matter of fact I have counted 10 events that we have held with the help of so many people who took time out of their busy lives to honor those who made that sacrifice I would like a round of applause and appreciation for those men and women who have taken time out of their busy lives to participate in these numerous events that took place this week in our city the war council in cooperation with
40:24the city put up reads on all the military monuments around our city at each Monument where the wreath was at each Monument a wreath was placed a prayer was offered and Taps were played in memory of all those service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice our city takes second place to no one in its commitment to our veterans memorial day is actually dedicated to those who didn't make the
40:57ultimate sacrifice let us not forget that and let's not only honor them today but also honor their families who have lost a loved one ladies and gentlemen no matter where I go I stand tall and proudly speak of my home forever forever I love my city and I love each and every one of you thank you so I know a gentleman who died at the age of2 God bless him this gentleman's career in the
41:42United States Navy spanned over 38 years he started out in Great Lakes he was stationed in paba he was in the Naval Academy he commanded two large squadrons and four ships he finished his career as the commanding officer of the Navy Training Center he received so many commendations I would need 10 minutes to name them all but then he was stationed in Newport where he met as he told me the gang from Fall River
42:21and he met the love of his life Peggy in Fall River he served as special assistant to then mayor Carlton bis later as executive director of the for River Housing Authority again he served as chairman of so many committees and he served on many boards he was on the board from the Girl Scouts he was on the board from the United Way he just did so much a gentleman who not only served his

43:45zeni dad served in the Navy for 38 years entering as a high school graduate he went through boot camp at Great Lakes Illinois his first post after after boot camp was the USS Maryland stationed at Pearl Harbor somehow luckily dad caught the eye of the captain and could quickly answer math questions and other questions the captain thought that my father's talents would be well served
44:12going for additional education got my father transferred to the prep school from the prep school he graduated um from the Navy Academy in three short years after the academy dad served on 11 different ships four as commanding officer two as commissioning commanding officer he also had two stints at the Navy air stations where he could fly basically take off and landings was his real problem but flying
44:47wasn't um he spoke often about being a Navy salvage diver he said that that really set him up for Life attacking problems understanding situations and preparing him for anything that really came at him he commanded two squadrons of ships five ships on each squadron at the end of his career after 36 years he returned to Great Lakes Illinois as Commander Naval Training Center coming full circle from where he
45:16started as a boot he enjoyed retirement for a very short time coming back to Four River in 1977 and got on the staff of Mayor Colton bis just in time for the Blizzard of 78 from there he went on to be executive director for the for for of a Housing Authority sat on many many boards was chairman of the police board was acting veterans administrator was the Lebanese American Veteran um
45:48officer St an's Hospital Advisory board but really what he loved about St an's was the fact that he could volunteer in their emerc room giving back your father's calling me he is tell him I said hi giving back to his community meant everything to him you see Dad was born in Dayton Ohio but Fall River was really his home he had many loves a good cigar a round a golf in
46:18Manhattan but his true love was my mom Peggy his family and his friends the United States Navy and his beloved for River dad enjoyed he helping people and readily and easily gave career advice and help for health reasons about 15 years ago he moved in with my brother and sister-in-law in Florida during our many nightly calls I would have to update dad on what was happening in for
46:42River often asking how's Linda how's the mayor how's the Housing Authority what's going on the last couple years was especially difficult for me my dad was 100% blind very hard a hearing I would ask him how he was doing he never complained always felt grateful he always said that he was blessed we buried dad in February with my mom at the age of 102 in the city he loved proudly wearing
47:16his Navy uniform displaying his service medals and his ribbons my father the captain was more than just a sailor he was my North Star he had strength and kind kindness the captain commanded respect but was always respectful he taught me the importance of community family and love to my father Captain zeni to all our veterans and especially to those who have given their lives in service of our nation you have our
