The Fall River Earth Day Kick-Off Event took place on April 22, 2022, featuring speeches from various elected officials and community leaders. The event aimed to celebrate Earth Day and encourage community involvement in local cleanups and environmental sustainability. Speakers included Congressman Jake Auchincloss, Representative Alan Silvia, and Representative Carol Fiola, who emphasized the importance of local action, clean energy, and addressing climate change. Congressman Auchincloss highlighted a $550 billion investment in clean energy tax credits and incentives for electrification in Congress, as well as secured funding for the National Offshore Wind Institute and related infrastructure in Bristol County. Patty Rigo, Director of Viva Fall River, discussed her organization's downtown revitalization efforts, including the "Viva South Main" initiative which last year installed 60 hanging flower baskets, landscaped tree beds, pruned trees, and collected over 28 yards of debris. Sarah Labossiere, Coordinator for Mass in Motion in Fall River, promoted upcoming cleanup events, including a second Earth Day cleanup on April 23 at 10 AM at Chew Park, next to the Globe Street fire station, and Rail Trail cleanups on May 7th and May 28th. The event concluded with instructions for volunteers to begin the cleanup, reinforcing the message that "Earth Day should be every day."
