A press event for the "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive was held on May 9, 2023, in Fall River, Massachusetts. Paul, a representative from the letter carriers, opened the event, highlighting the importance of the drive and thanking various sponsors including bag sponsors, Campbell Soup, and others. He introduced Julie Pereira, the new food drive coordinator, and mentioned the "Steve Caper fund," which raised $3,000 from postal employees, matched by the national Union for a total of $6,000 distributed to about 20 local food pantries. A new veterans group from Coffee Row on Third Street was also added to the list of beneficiaries. Kim Smith from the United Way of Greater Fall River further detailed the national campaign, emphasizing the partnership with United Ways and letter carriers. She thanked key sponsors: Saint Anne's Hospital (represented by Tracy Ibbison), Bank Five (represented by Andrea Rodricks), and Blount Seafood (represented by Andrea Walker). The drive is scheduled for Saturday, May 13, 2023, in Fall River and Somerset, where residents are encouraged to fill biodegradable green bags with non-perishable items for letter carriers to collect. Last year, the drive collected 70,000 pounds of food. Mayor Paul Coogan read a proclamation declaring May 13th as "Letter Carriers Food Drive Day" in Fall River, recognizing the NALC program which started in 1991 and collected over 62,000 pounds in Fall River and Somerset in 2022. Paul concluded by thanking Postmaster Chuck Masters and the post office for their support and supplies, noting that 2,100 buckets were filled last year. Julie Pereira shared her personal enthusiasm for the event, calling it her favorite workday.
