Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll visited Battleship Cove in Fall River, Massachusetts, on August 3, 2023, to highlight state investments in the historic site. During her visit, she announced a $7 million allocation from the Commonwealth for reinvestment in the state-owned pier at Battleship Cove, which is a Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) property. This funding aims to support the long-term growth and sustainability of the site, emphasizing the strong partnership between the state and the non-profit Battleship Cove. Lt. Governor Driscoll stressed that strong communities contribute to a strong Commonwealth, and investments in cultural and historic assets like Battleship Cove are crucial for economic vitality. Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan, Senator Mike Rodrigues, and Representative Alan Sylvia also spoke, praising the collaborative efforts of the state administration and the local legislative delegation. They underscored Battleship Cove's role as a key piece of Fall River's identity, a significant historical landmark, and a vital economic driver for tourism in the city and the wider South Coast Area. Megan Rathburn, Executive Director of Battleship Cove, expressed gratitude for the state's support and detailed recent projects, including a $1.5 million ARPA-funded project to paint the USS Massachusetts hull and address steel wastage, and a new hangar for helicopters funded by a Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism grant. She noted that Battleship Cove has welcomed over 6.5 million visitors since 1965 and that more than 1 million children and parents have participated in its overnight program since 1972.
